Skin Resurfacing

Skin resurfacing
What is it?
Skin resurfacing, or laser resurfacing, is a non-invasive skin procedure that involves the usage of lasers to improve the skin’s tone, texture and appearance, while also minimizing minor abnormalities and flaws.
Laser resurfacing can help improve signs of aging such as fine lines and wrinkles, while also improving skin tone and complexion. It can also provide other skin benefits including:
  • Removal of age spots
  • Evening of skin tone and texture
  • Repairing sun-damaged skin
  • Treating mild to moderate acne scarring
How is it done?
Laser resurfacing can be done using either of the two common types of lasers – ablative and nonablative. Ablative laser can help remove the damaged outer layer of the skin, while heating the deeper layers of skin. The heat energy passing through stimulates cell regeneration, which in turn allows for production of elastin and collagen, that helps tighten and shape the skin. Nonablative laser also helps stimulate collagen and elastin production in the skin cells, but with a slightly less aggressive technique than the ablative one. Hence, the results for a nonablative laser treatment last for a shorter time than the ablative one, but is equally as beneficial.
What are the Pre- and Post-procedure steps for Skin resurfacing?
Before a laser resurfacing treatment, you will need to consult the doctor, so as to accurate determine your concerns and identify the best suited type of laser for you. Once fixed, you will be asked to follow certain steps that can smoothen out the treatment procedure. You may be asked to avoid sun exposure and smoking in the days leading up to the treatment. You may also be asked to take certain medications to ease the laser treatment session.
After the treatment is complete, you will be needed to follow aftercare steps that will help you have a speedy and effective recovery. You may be asked to take painkillers or apply ice packs while recovering, so as to reduce any redness and discomfort. You may also be asked to wear sunscreens and avoid excessive sun exposure while recovering to avoid reversal of the treatment.
